The Biology Club and Pre-Professional Club at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) held a series of on-campus toy drives between November 18 and December 5 to benefit children at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Their efforts raised more than $400 in toys and donations and are part of the clubs’ ongoing commitment to community service.
On December 13, the clubs delivered their contributions to the 2024 Festival of Stars event in Little Rock, Arkansas. This annual fundraiser, organized by Arkansas Children’s Hospital, supports patients and families during the holiday season. In 2024, the event raised $361,046 in donations from participants across the state.
Layne Barnett, a junior chemistry major and president of the Pre-Professional Club, said, “As college students, we believe in using our resources to serve our communities and help others. It was an honor to deliver gifts to the children and bring them some joy this holiday season. On behalf of both clubs, I can say we’re excited to continue serving our campus and community next semester.”
Emily Esquivel, a junior biology and biochemistry double major and president of the Biology Club, added, “Both clubs are incredibly proud of our members’ hard work to make this drive a success. It’s an honor to contribute to such a meaningful cause and spread holiday cheer to children at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.”
Dr. John Hunt, professor of biology at UAM and advisor to the Biology Club, expressed his pride in the students’ efforts. “The Biology Club and Pre-Professional Club have a long history of community service, but this year’s members have worked harder than ever to make their community a better place. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
