MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team played their first road match of the 2024 season on Saturday evening. The Boll Weevils traveled to Weatherford, Oklahoma to take on fellow GAC member Southwestern Oklahoma State University. UAM came out of the contest with a 39-28 win over the Bulldogs, increasing their record to 2-0.
The victory is the first win in Weevil Football program history in Weatherford. UAM now leads the all-time series, 7-6, with the team’s record in Weatherford, increasing to 1-5 since the teams first met in 2011.
The Bulldogs were the first team on the board, scoring a touchdown in their second drive of the first quarter. The SWOSU offense would win the first half, heading to the locker rooms at the end of the second quarter up 14-10. After seeing the home team increase its lead to 28-10, the Boll Weevils flipped the script, outscoring the Bulldogs 29-0 to close the game.
Senior quarterback Demilon Brown gave UAM a 16-22 performance with 205 passing yards. Isaiah Cross was the leading receiver in the game, grabbing four receptions for 71 total yards, with the longest being 27 yards. Jordan Mansfield followed behind with three receptions and 45 yards. On the ground, Brown also led the Boll Weevils with 15 carries for 128 net yards, increasing his total offense on the game to 333.
Defensively, AJ Bullock once again stood above the rest, grabbing nine total tackles, with six solo stops on the night.
Tanner Steenbock led the day in extra-point attempts, going 4-4. He also kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second.
Post Game
Boll Weevil Head Coach Hud Jackson had this to say after the game: “Our guys finished tonight and I think that’s what makes me the most proud. Though our coaches did a great job of keeping our guys moving in a positive direction. But to get a win in that fashion says a lot about the culture that we’re trying to build here. Finishing the way we did shows that all the hard work we put in during the off-season and summer is paying off. We can celebrate for a very short period because of the preparation for Harding starts tomorrow at noon. Eat ’em up!”
