

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) arrested Sherman Johnson, 28, an African American male, in connection with a rape and aggravated assault investigation involving a female store clerk at J & B Liquor, located at on US-63, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
On January 2, 2026, deputies were dispatched to the business after receiving a report of an aggravated assault and rape. The victim’s name is not being released in accordance with Arkansas Code Annotated A.C.A. § 16-90-1104 and Arkansas victim rights laws, which prohibit the disclosure of the identity of sexual assault victims.
Investigators state that immediately following the assault and just prior to deputies arriving, Johnson attempted to flee the store on foot. As he fled, he encountered Arkansas State Police Highway Patrol Trooper Trevaughn Moore, who was conducting a traffic stop nearby and heard the victim. Johnson attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by Trooper Moore a short time later.
JCSO deputies arrived moments later, along with criminal investigators assigned to the JCSO Criminal Investigation Division (CID). CID investigators spoke with the victim and collected evidence, which will be processed accordingly as the investigation continues.
Johnson was transported to the W.C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center, where he is being held on probable cause for Rape and Aggravated Assault.
